Presidents Letter

As an AGD member for 30 years I have seen this organization grow from merely advocating continuing education to becoming the recognized voice of general dentistry.  As of 12/8/08 the AGD has 35,265 members.  The AGD strives to work with the ADA while advocating the general dentists' views on any issue.  Membership should be sought by all members of general dentistry who are committed to excellence.

On federal government issues a lobbyist firm is employed and there is a yearly program entitled A Great Dentist goes to Washington. It is a  government relations conference where members can meet with congressional representatives to  protect the interest of general dentists.

The AGD works at the state level to recognize continuing education transcripts for all state boards.  It also seeks to increase Medicaid payments in the states to improve access to care.  Please view the Access to Care White Paper @ adg.org.

A goal of the AGD is to convey the image to the public and the profession that its members are committed to excellence. AGD spokespersons are featured in regional and national publications in an effort to raise awareness.  A recent consumer web page “KnowYourTeeth.com” is available to the general public.

The Indiana AGD continues to be devoted to excellence in continuing education.  I want to thank Dr. Ted Rees for his efforts as Director of our FastTrack program which is geared toward our members obtaining Fellowship and Mastership.  Also, a thank you is in order for our Executive Director, Shannon Gossett-Webb, for managing our meetings.

Thanks also to Dr. Michael Stoller, Membership Chairman.  His diligent work has resulted in the development of a student component of the IAGD at the Indiana School of Dentistry.

My term as IAGD president was made easy by committed volunteer members at all levels.  I want to extend my thanks to Dr. Charles Bartholomew for his excellent performance as Secretary / Treasurer.  Also thank you to Dr. Michael Gordon, Vice President and President Elect.

I want to recognize the time and efforts of Dr. Thomas Murray for producing a topnotch newsletter for many years.  Also, thank you to Dr. James Foulkes our PACE representative.

I value the input of each of our District Directors, as they each help to conduct  business at our board meetings.

It has been a privilege and an honor to serve with this group of excellent and committed dentists and I appreciate the time and effort you have given to the AGD.

Sincerely

Rodney R. Kalb D.D.S.; F.A.G.D.

Mission Statement

The Fast Track to Excellence is a continuing education continuum under sponsorship of the Indiana Academy of General Dentistry.  Our intention and desire is to provide current, relevant, and practical continuing education for the general practitioner in all aspects of dentistry.  We will provide and select dental clinicians and speakers (academians, researchers and practicing dentists alike) who have demonstrated superior knowledge and skills related to the subject matter of each course.  Our course will rotate through the various disciplines of dentistry to cover all aspects involved in the general practice.  The lectures are intended to be relevant for practical training for those seeking to expand their treatment skills or serve as a knowledge base for those desiring to keep their understanding and recommendations current to the standard of care.

Each Fast Track session will function as an excellent stand alone CE lecture experience.  The Fast Track is also designed and began as a vehicle to function as a participation course for those seeking to fulfill their FAGD and MAGD requirements.  It is our intention to fulfill the needs for any and all practicing clinicians of dentistry wishing to further their skills and knowledge.

FAGD and MAGD candidates will be given clinical assignments following each session for in office completion and return to “present” these assignments on the Friday evening after the meeting is completed for the day.  The purpose of the presentation is to document the completion of the assignment and to share the learning experience with other doctors attending.  This presentation session typically covers some failures of treatment as well as the successful treatment and trouble shooting problematic scenarios which proves to be of benefit to all in attendance.  All doctors registered for the Saturday and/ or Sunday lecture are to sit in on the presentation session for this valuable learning experience and will receive the additional CE at no charge.

The rotation of disciplines will vary depending upon availability of qualified speakers and programs.

Additional Information

The Fast Track To Excellence series is designed to facilitate achievement for the fellowship/mastership candidate.  The program equally serve the needs of all general practitioners wishing to keep current on the cutting edge of the new trends and techniques developing in dentistry and to receive a diversified clinical education.

Your course workbook and manual is designed to help you learn as well as serve as a tool to apply in your practice.  Unlike other CE opportunities, the Fast Track to Excellence has the advantage of being sponsored by an academy that focuses on CE for GP’s.

The Fast Track to Excellence is designed to help you learn as well for others to learn from you.  Take advantage of this opportunity!

Following the Friday meeting there will be an opportunity to present over the previous meeting topic.  Presentation will be your opportunity to share what you know.  If you don’t plan to present on the clinical assignment you are welcome to just sit in and learn from other’s experience.

For the Fast Track meetings the Holiday Inn holds a block of rooms for 30 days out from the seminar date.  It will help us greatly if you would register for the upcoming meeting before you leave this weekend.  Your stay at the hotel is greatly encouraged as it allows you to be in the thick of things (meeting wise).  Being a guest at the hotel during the meetings helps keep the costs lower and in turn keeps course fees down.

The meeting includes lunches, which are served in the open forum area reserved for course attendees only.  During lunch you are encouraged to participate in “lunch and learn”.  “Lunch and learn” is an opportunity to learn and share some management pearls from your colleagues relating to the dental discipline being studied.  Because this is directly related to your CE experience the additional hours of study are reflected in the hours awarded.
